Flute Solo

The sound of a solo flute playing your favorite music may add the perfect touch to your wedding ceremony.  If you prefer, I can work with your organist or pianist, or arrange for other instruments, such as harp, guitar, or violin, to go with the flute.

Solo flute can be a great choice for receptions, business events, and parties as well.  My hand-made rose gold flute has the versatility, power and subtlety to express a wide range of feelings and styles.  My solo repertoire for flute alone or with CD accompaniment includes classical, swing, show tunes, popular songs, holiday music, and more.

Autobiography - David Howard
During my school years in New Haven, Connecticut, I studied clarinet, flute, and oboe, and later picked up alto sax.  I have played in many musical groups including concert bands, pit bands, orchestras, and garage bands.  I earned a B. A. Cum Laude in Music History from Yale University (1970) and an M. A. from Smith College i
n Musicology (1973).  My oboe teachers were Harry Bartocetti (New Haven Symphony Principal oboe), John Holmes (Boston Symphony second oboe) and Alan Vogel (Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra).  As I got older, I realized that flute was my true love, and I have focused my musical efforts increasingly on the flute. I am largely self-taught, learning by imitating great flutists such as James Galway, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Ian Anderson; by reading; and by teaching (my students have taught me a lot!).

Since retiring in 2004 after a 30 year non-musical career, I have been able to devote most of my time to musical activities.  I have performed with the Windham Concert Band since 1997, Flutissimo Flute Duo since 2002, and the Granite State Woodwind Quintet since 2006.  I teach flute, direct the Windham Flute Ensemble, and serve as president of the Windham Community Band .
